Wonderful stay - Rating 5/5

We had a lovely stay at Gil Dun Guest House and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to visit Edinburgh. The city centre is only a short bustrip away.

Another wonderful stay at Gil Dun. - Rating 5/5

My wife and I have stayed at Gil Dun on our last four visits to Edinburgh and would not wish to stay anywhere else. The house is warm, cosy and inviting, with loads of character. It is in a quiet cul de sac just a few seconds walk from a very regular bus service into the city centre, which is also just an easy 30 minutes walk away. It is very close to Arthur's Seat, giving ample opportunity for scenic walks. Bedrooms are spotlessly clean, quiet, very well-furnished and always warm. The en-suite facilities are excellent. Breakfasts, which are served in a delightful dining room, are delicious and most generous. Finally, Gerry and Bill are superb hosts, attentive, informative and warmly welcoming. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Excellent - Rating 5/5

Gerry and Bill were the best hosts one can hope for.Bill waited for me when I arrived late in the evening and provided detailed direction from airport to their place via bus.Gerry gave me suggestions how to spend 2 days and one of the highlights was the hike to Arthur’s Seat. Their house is in an excellent location and minutes away from Salisbury Arms where I dined two nights in a row.I had rewarding two days in Edinburgh.

Friendly and Welcoming - Rating 5/5

From the moment we were greeted at the front door by Gerry we felt very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The guesthouse was very clean and the breakfasts were well catered with a great variety of food to select from. Gerry had a good knowledge of the local area and was very informative. We would recommend it to our friends if they go to Edinburgh.

Or stay at Gil Fun Guest House - Rating 5/5

I stayed here with my adult son and had a twin room. We had a wonderful stay. The room was cosy, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was lovely and I may have been converted to whisky on my porridge! Our host was very welcoming and friendly. The guest house is about a 25 minute walk or 10 minute bus ride to the centre so ideally situated for us. I would happily stay here again and would highly recommend it as a plane to stay.

Very Pleased - Rating 4/5

I was very happy with the friendliness, cleanliness, service, dining room decor, menu and wonderful delicious food. However I had a couple of problems like with the stairs as I have back pain all the time and because I had a single room the bathroom was down the hall. That made it difficult in the middle of the night for trips to the bathroom. Other than that I had a wonderful stay.

It is one of the best B&B I have ever stayed in - I have been to quite many B&B in Canada and the US.The place is very clean and decorated nicely. The room is spacious and the window of our room looks out to a beautiful backyard garden. The host offers the best breakfast we could ask for!In addition, it is very easy to get to the centre of the town by bus (it takes about 15 minutes.) If I am ever in Edinburgh again, I will definitely go back to Gil Dun.

We were a family of 4 adults and spent 4 nights in the family room. The space was perfect and very comfortable (both kids got their own beds). We had some special requests (late check in, early cab to airport, etc.) which were all graciously accommodated. We only met Bill once (very nice), and interacted mostly with Garry. He was a great host and enjoyed interacting with him at breakfast. Despite being busy he always took time to answer questions, give touring advice, and simply interact. Loved everything about Gil Din, location, food, room and service! Would return in a heartbeat and recommend the place to all heading to this beautiful city!

Superior Accommodations - Rating 5/5

We stayed at the Gil Dun Guest House for 7 nights, Oct 2017. We could not have been more pleased with this choice of accommodations. The room was clean and nicely decorated, with a refreshing garden view on the 2nd floor. With a convenient location down a quiet cul-de-sac, it was perfectly peaceful at night without any street noise detected. The bus stop just around the corner proved to be very handy for getting into town, yet on several occasions we walked the distance and enjoyed the views along the way. Gerald was very helpful with answering any questions we had regarding Edinburgh, and he offered us some excellent suggestions as well. He was always readily available to assist in any way required. Everyone we met was very pleasant and cordial. Maggie served us in the Breakfast room and was a dear. We highly recommend this B&B to anyone who is lucky enough to find it. Could not have been a more perfect place ! - Rating 5/5

Stayed 2 nights to see highlights of Edinburgh then continue south . Jerry , the friendly on site owner, gave us expert tips to see the highlights, take the bus, spot on dining recommendations . The room was nicely furnished and decorated, six pillows per bed, modern en suite bathroom, and a huge window over the garden. Flowers were fragrant in the foyer and dining room. Breakfast was cooked to order with French press coffee and several cold and warm fresh choices. Really able to recharge incomfortable surroundings. The building is historic with high ceilings and thick walls, never heard to other guests . Parked right next to the front door.. Stayed here on a Rick Steves book recommendation. Loved it and will return!

A Wonderful Stay! - Rating 5/5

Dear Gerard and Jeremy, I hope not to be too late with my review, I'm so sorry!Everyone should stay in this elegant, quiet and very well served Guest House. The bus stop is close to the house and at only 10 min to the old town.Gerard and Jeremy were extraordinary and extremely kind and welcoming. Definitely, breakfast has been the best moment of the day, Jeremy with his kindness and elegant way to serve, had always a smile for every guest making us feel really special. The breakfast was simply delicious!Unfortunately, I can't speak English (my bad! Sorry!), but despite this, we found our way to communicate and they have never made me feel bad about it!Maybe it could be strange the breakfast time because it starts at 8.30 a.m., a little be late if you want to start early your day, but it isn't an issue at all, after all, it was a holiday and the light during the summer is until night! I will be back in Edinburgh soon and without any doubt, I will stay in this amazing and relaxing Guest House.Thank you, Gerard and Jeremy, for having made my stay so special! Marcella

Charming, Comfortable, Perfect Location - Rating 5/5

My wife and I recently spent three nights here, and we could not have had a better experience. Our room was comfortable, the morning breakfast was delicious, and the owners were terribly helpful at every turn. Positioned in a quiet cut-de-sac just south of the old town, we quickly made it into town, or to local attractions like Rosslyn Chapel, by using Edinburgh's excellent bus system. In my view a far better choice than the pricier hotels downtown.

The music played at veeadfast was also wonderful. We loved speaking with Gerry in the morning at breakfast, and he was extremely helpful when figuring out our day plans. We stayed at the Gil Dun Guest House for four nights earlier this month and loved it.We were warmly welcomed and Geri gave us some great tips on sight seeing.Bus is a snap to catch at the top of the cul de sac.Our room was beautiful with a recently remodeled bathroom.French press coffee was most appreciated and porridge with a whiskey float wonderful in the mornings, followed by a full hot breakfastLovely attention to furnishing and décor. This was our first guest house experience and we much preferred it over a cookie cutter American type hotel. If couples are used to a queen or king bed at home they might consider a room with two twin beds vs. a double bed.

Superb B&B! - Rating 5/5

My wife and I were greeted with a simple "Here are your keys and here is your room. This key opens the front door if you're out after 10pm."Thank goodness. I'm not a fan of the half-hour lecture you often get upon arriving at B&Bs and this was refreshing. Both the room and the ensuite bathroom were very clean and nicely decorated. The shower was excellent - always a bonus! When we went down to breakfast in the morning, Gerry (spelling?) greeted us and went through the eating options. We both chose the salmon and poached eggs. Absolutely delicious. To sum up:a very professional and welcoming establishment that we would recommend to anybody. Thank you for making our stay in Edinburgh so enjoyable. We booked this Guest House at short notice but had been greatly impressed by the reviews we read. These proved to be exactly right, and Gil Dun is a perfect place to stay in Edinburgh. We arrived by car and there are 4 spaces for parking out front which was a further attraction for us. We stayed 2 nights in room 6 on the top floor. The final flight of steps are very steep but manageable and the room is superb with every facility required. This is also a quiet room and very warm and comfortable.Breakfast is another great experience, with everything cooked to order. The full Scottish is a feast to behold but I rose to the challenge both mornings. The owners/staff are very friendly and helpful and care passionately about their city and the service they offer. Close proximity to a bus stop means getting to Princes Street is very easy making Gil House an ideal location to be based for a visit to Edinburgh

Cosiest guest house - Rating 5/5

Went to Edinburgh for some Christmas shopping. It's the second time we've stayed at Gil Dun and it was just as good as the first time. Host is very welcoming and helpful. The rooms are warm and beds very comfortable and a great breakfast, even accommodating vegetarian. It's a good location to get the bus into the city as bus stop round the corner. Would definitely recommend this guest and will be staying there again next time we go

Excellent choice - Rating 5/5

We stayed for 2 nights in this nice guest house, located in a quiet neighbourhood. The room was clean and tastefully furnished. Received a very warm welcome from Gerry, who was also ful of tips of how to get to the city center (we didn't have a car rented), what to see, what to do. The breakfast was really good with a lot of different choices (smoked salmon is exquisite). It's only 20 min on foot to the city center.

Our stay of three nights was brief, but we wished it were longer! The guest house was exactly as depicted on the website, and with the addition of approachable, helpful and very welcoming staff, it was the perfect place for us to stay for the Tattoo, in a surprisingly quiet location, having easy routes to the city. The breakfast was understated, exceeding our expectations and will satisfy even the largest appetite. This is a place I feel sure we will visit again!

Excellent Edinbiurgh B&B - Rating 5/5

We stayed at the Gil Dun Guest house for four nights. We had one of the upstairs bedrooms. It is spacious, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was excellent, and the skylight leaves it bathed in natural light 18 and a half hours a day this time of year. Breakfast each day was quite good. We generally ordered eggs, tomatoes, beans and the hash browns. Eggs were made to order. Our son had porridge each day. Plentiful supply of toast was included. All were quality. Location is excellent, just a few blocks from Holyrood Park and the Meadows. Only takes 15 minutes to walk to the Royal Mile. Bus line stops just outside the B&B. Take the 14, 30 or 33 line pretty much wherever you need to go in Edinburgh. Owners are courteous and helpful. They arranged for a taxi to take us to the train station on our departure day. There is a fine pub right up the street, the Salisbury Arms, and plenty of other restaurants within a 10-minute walk. A two-minute walk each morning to the newsagent. Everything was right on time. Highly recommended.

Just What We Wanted - Rating 5/5

We chose this Guest House based on Trip Advisor's ratings and we're glad we did. Gerry, fhe innkeeper was immediately welcoming and stayed that way every day. He was also a weath of very accurate information. His advice always made an outing better. The room was lovely with comfortable beds and linens. We had a quiet room overlooking the garden. The bathroom was clean and had a large shower with plenty of hot water. The Inn is on a very quiet cul de sac off a main bus route and is about 1.5-2 miles from many sites I with very easy bus service a half block away. And of courses tea in your room all day. We enjoyed a nourishing and full breakfast. My wife had the smoked salmon and eggs every day because she enjoyed it so much. There are also several very good restaurants a five minute walk away. We had an excellent meal and inexpensive (by Edinburgh standards) at the Indian restaurant, Foujon.

Single rooms can sometimes feel more like a closet, but not the case at Gil Dun. The beautifully decorated room was very spacious and the bathroom, although across the hall was huge. The rooms appear to have been recently redecorated by someone with very good taste in colour and design. Add a nice quiet street and a host that provides you with very good information on how to use public transport in Edinburgh and you have a wonderful stay.

We really enjoyed staying at Gil Dun. Bill was so helpful in every way. He directed us to the best Indian food we've ever had and it was around the corner. The bus stop is at the end of the block to take you downtown and all the sights. He printed our boarding passes for our flight and left food out for us to take at 5:30am. The room was large and comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable of our whole trip. The new carpet was beautiful.

Gil Dun Guest House - Rating 5/5

Gil Dun Guest House was my temporary residence for three nights while sightseeing in Edinburgh. It was recommended in the Rick Steves' guidebooks and I liked what I saw on Gil Dun's website. It lived up to the reviews and more-great location, friendly manager and a comfortable room at a bargain rate.

Wow! - Rating 5/5

What a find.Gerry and Bill were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room we had (no 1 on the ground floor) was very comfortable.Gil Dun is conveniently placed for the city and the bus is at the end of the road directly into the centre. The breakfasts are amazing - but you do need to do lots of walking to get rid of the calories.Definitely recommended to all.

Lovely place - Rating 5/5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautifully presented guest house. It was welcoming and clean as well as spacious. It was convenient for buses into central Edinburgh but was tucked away in a quiet cul de sac so it was peaceful. The breakfasts were very good with a wide selection of food available. We will definitely recommend it to family and friends and in fact have already booked another stay.

Perfect! - Rating 5/5

Where to start?Gerry &Bill run a beautifully decorated B&B. Some rooms are traditional, some contemporary. Our room (6) was a contemporary room on the 2nd floor - well appointed, very comfy bed. There's a huge choice at breakfast - all very fresh - more like a hotel but with a personal touch! There wasn't a single thing I could pull them on - the level of service and value for money were 2nd to none.I'll definitely stay again - Gerry was a superb host - there is so much to do in Edinburgh!

Wonderful Centrally Located Edinburgh Guest House - Rating 5/5

We booked a stay with Gil Dun Guest House for our first visit to Scotland, wanting to be close to the city center of Edinburgh. The accomodations were extremely well kept, and we were made to feel quite welcome and comfortable from the moment we arrived.Gerry went out of his way to ensure that we were happy with every facet of our stay and provided us with quite a bit of advice for getting around the city and surrounding areas. The guest house is only a couple of minutes from the city center by bus or car, but is located on a quiet cul-de-sac away from the bustle of traffic and crowds. We can't recommend Gil Dun highly enough!

Rugby + Sightseeing!- Rating 5/5

Gil Dun is the perfect Guesthouse for comfort, facilities, decor along with a charming host called Gerry. The buses are frequent but a 20 min walk to Princes street is the best way to start the day especially after the best breakfast in Edinburgh! Website is very informative and clear. We had no problem getting from Airport to Gil Dun following the instructions.I would highly recommend this Guest House to all ages and would definitely visit again. Stayed 2 nights and managed to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Castle, watch Scotland v England at Murrayfield and visit Holyrood Palace + 3 separate hop on off routes round the city.Brilliant memories.Thanks.

Thank you so much Gil Dun for making our stay so incredible. We loved coming back at night, knowing that we would be warm, safe and comfortable. The distance is easy because of the bus system and it was nice to be somewhere quiet and away from the noise of the city center. Breakfast was delicious and we felt very well cared for. Stay here if you are going to Edinburgh, I promise you won't regret it.

We stayed at Gil Dun guest house for the weekend. The house is very clean, tastefully decorated and maintained to very high standards. Breakfast is very good with lots of options. Situated just outside of the city centre with a very frequent bus service at the end of the street. However if you like walking its a pleasant 20/30 minute walk.Jerry one of the owners was extremely helpful with local information, lovely friendly person, who really took the time to talk to guests.Would definitely stay he again and can highly recommend it!

Superb hospitality! - Rating 5/5

My wife and I, along with our lively 7-year old son recently stayed at the Gil Dun GH for 4 nights and were thrilled with the choice. Gerry and Bill are superb hosts and were especially accommodating and attentive to our young son, who enjoyed Gerry's chats, lollipops, and playtime in the garden with their dog. The wonderful breakfasts served in a lovely setting are great motivation to rise and shine and get on with each day. Gerry is a great source of information about visiting the city, dining options, and sundry needs of travelers. The B&B is conveniently located relative to the central part of the city, which can be reached via frequent buses or a 20-minute downhill walk. I wouldn't stay anyplace else in Edinburgh after our experience.

Two Excellent Nights - Rating 5/5

We could not fault Gil Dun:very clean and friendly, great decor, superb breakfast (a joy to have a fresh peach). It was very hot when we stayed and we would have loved the offer of a cooling fan in the room- but then how often do you get that kind of heatwave in Edinburgh! Thanks to all.

Clean and Modern - Rating 5/5

Unfortunately the stay was short. However, enough to meet the lovely staff and enjoy the clean and updated room which did not compromise its period character. A true pleasure near enough to the town centre (20min walk) and far enough for peace and quiet.

Comfortable stay - Rating 5/5

Had a comfortable and hassle-free stay at Gil Dun for three nights. We were a group of 4 and took the family room. Gerard, the owner, made us feel at home and took pains to provide all the information that he thought would be useful to us (and it was !). Location - just a 15 minute walk from the Royal Mile. Bus stop located conveniently around the corner from Spence Street on which Gil Dun is situated. Room cleaned everyday and fresh towels provided. Breakfast was good, with ample variety.

We had an excellent stay at the Gil Dun Guest House. The room was well appointed, had a large bathroom, and the breakfast was great. Both Bill and Maggie were very friendly and helpful in providing advice and tips about Edinburgh. The only problem we had was with the wi-fi connection, however that was not the fault of Gil Dun.
